Find out moreI love this part of Italy. On a road trip, I explored Sicily’s unique soul, where ancient history whispers from crumbling temples, and the aroma of citrus and spice fills the air. My trip was a whirlwind of sights, flavours, and unexpected delights. Mornings began with the ritual of a strong espresso and a flaky cannoli, its ricotta filling boasting sweetness from honey of the Nebrodi mountains. Lunch was a daily celebration: from the melt-in-your-mouth freshness of fish straight off the boat in Cefalù, to the tasty pasta alla Norma in Catania – a symphony of tomatoes, organic ricotta, and perfectly fried aubergines.
Wandering through the bustling street market of Vucciria in Palermo is a feast for the senses. Lentini blood oranges glowed like embers, Bronte pistachios offered subtle sweetness, and the bright red flakes of Trapani sea salt shimmered like jewels. But Sicily is more than just food.
Driving from coast to coast, I could delve into history in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento or wander the atmospheric alleys of Ortigia, Syracuse's ancient island heart.
In the evenings, squares come alive with chatter and laughter. Sicilians are some of the warmest people I've met. Venture beyond the tourist hotspots and you might be offered a glass of homemade Marsala wine, while the sunset turns the water surrounding the ancient mill in the Saline of Trapani orange and pink.
From hidden coves like the one in Marzamemi to the underwater world around the charming coast of Favignana, Sicily is an island of endless surprises. So come explore – Sicily awaits!
