Day 3

Morning

Le Domaine du Val d'Argan

After a last breakfast above the rooftops of Marrakech, our escape to Essaouira began. But before we reached the coastal city, we stopped at Le Domaine du Val d'Argan - Morocco's smallest winery. Between sun-drenched vines, we learnt how climate change is affecting cultivation and threatening up to 70% of the harvest. The narrow rows of vines told of hard work and passion. Here, wines full of character are produced, which are characterised by the heat and drought of the region. The tour offered exciting insights into the challenges and opportunities of wine production in Morocco - an experience that went far beyond a classic wine tasting.

Midday

Le Domaine du Val d'Argan

Our lunch was served in an idyllic courtyard, where the light fell golden through the leaves of old olive trees. While bees buzzed above the fragrant flowers, we enjoyed a selection of Moroccan salads - spicy, fresh and surprisingly diverse. The crispy deep-fried aubergine and courgette made a delicious addition before the steaming chicken tagine with lemon was served. The feast was accompanied by local wines, which we could taste at will. After this enjoyable stop, we continued to Afous Argan, where we received a brief introduction to the art of argan oil production.

Afternoon

Medina of Essaouira

At the city gate of Essaouira, a man with a blue handcart was waiting for us, transporting our luggage through the narrow streets - a traditional way of getting around in the car-free medina. We immediately noticed the relaxed atmosphere of the city: no hectic market hustle and bustle, less noisy traders, but a fresh sea breeze and a maritime charm. After our check-in in the modern Riad Raoud Rayhan, our first way led us to the city wall with its imposing fortifications from the 18th century. They were built at a time when Essaouira developed into an important trading port under Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah. Today, they offer the perfect place to let your gaze wander over the sea.

Evening

Café Mandala Society

Back in the alleys of the medina we let ourselves drift. In small shops we discovered artistically woven baskets, fragrant spices and handmade jewellery. The vendors were less intrusive than in Marrakech, which made strolling around extra enjoyable. Finally, we stopped at the Mandala Society - a relaxed café with creative cuisine. While we enjoyed falafel salad and fish and chips, the air slowly cooled down. We warmed up with a hot cup of tea. Essaouira had a magic all its own - calm, artistic and filled with coastal charms. A wonderful end to an eventful day.

Day 4

A new day in Essaouira began and we were excited to explore other facets of the city. From the hustle and bustle of the harbour to a relaxing break on the beach to a special restaurant visit, the day offered a varied mix of experiences. With our eyes open and the camera always at hand, we set off.

Morning

Essaouira Fish Market

Our day began with a visit to the fish market at the port of Essaouira - a place full of life and colour. Traders called out their prices while seagulls circled screeching above the bobbing fishing boats. The intense smell of the day's catch was in the air, mixed with the salty wind that blew through the narrow alley. Rays of sunlight were reflected on the damp pavement and bathed the scene in a warm light. The hustle and bustle, the shimmering colours of the freshly caught fish, the contrasts of light and shadow - these were moments that reflect the soul of Essaouira.

Midday

Beach bar La Coupole

After the hustle and bustle of the market, La Coupole - right on the beach - was the ideal place to take a break. With a refreshing, homemade peach iced tea in hand, we enjoyed the view of the Atlantic Ocean. The waves rolled evenly against the sand, while people walked on the promenade, chatted or played a game of basketball. There was a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere here - no hustle and bustle, no noise, just the gentle sound of the sea and the soft hubbub of beachgoers. Essaouira was proving every-bit restorative.

Afternoon

Restaurant Azouka Eatery

In the early afternoon we visited a hidden gem - the Azouka Eatery. The small restaurant, open only from Tuesday to Saturday between 12 noon and 3 p.m., is located on a balcony overlooking Place Al Khaima and is run by a young couple with a lot of passion. The menu changes regularly and offers creative, homemade dishes prepared with fresh ingredients. We enjoyed a selection of vegetarian treats, served with homemade sourdough bread. The homely atmosphere, the fantastic food and the view of the hustle and bustle of the medina made this special restaurant a real discovery.

Evening

Tagharte Beach

As the sun approached the horizon, we were drawn to the Plage Tagharte - the perfect place to end the day. We sat down in the cosy beach bar Le Panoramique while the evening sun bathed the sky in spectacular tones. On the sand, riders on horses and camels passed by, their silhouettes contrasting dramatically against the golden light. Off the coast, the Île de Mogador, whose history dates back to the 5th century, loomed on the horizon. The sparkling glitter of the waves, the last rays of the sun and the play of colours in the sky created a scenery that was made for dreamlike shots - and an unforgettable moment in Essaouira.

Next stop: Agafay Desert

The eventful days in Essaouira were followed by a change of scenery today: our next destination was the Agafay Desert, a barren, fascinating landscape south of Marrakech. Even in advance, we had wondered what it would be like to spend a night in the middle of this vast, stony desert - far away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.
