Marrakech is the iconic Moroccan destination.

Get carried away by the electric atmosphere of the Jemaa el-Fna, or sink into the sublime at the Jardin Majorelle: Marrakech is a city of contrasts, where history and tradition are still imbued with vibrancy - there’s nothing stuck in the past here. The trademarks of the city are plenty - stay in luxurious riads, explore a labyrinth of old town streets, and soak up colourful souks. Perch at rooftop bars and watch the golden sun sink behind the Bahia Palace, planning your days around navigating the medina, sinking into hammams and discovering delectable dining in coveted restaurants.

Morning

Saadian Tombs

Start with a spot of culture. This royal tomb was built by Saadian Sultan Ahmed Al Mansour Ed Dahbi in the late 16th century. It’s an inspiring example of Islamic art and architecture, the inner tomb intricately detailed with mesmerising geometric shapes that glisten with gold. This sacred chamber is the centrepeice of a vast complex, each space more intricate and beautiful than the last. Roughly 170 burials accompany the great sultan, ranked in order of importance (with many wives and advisors relegated to the courtyard). The tombs are only accessible through a tiny passageway in the Kasbah mosque, after a succeeding sultan walled up the tombs to hide away his predecessor.

Maison de la Photographie

Next head to the Maison de la Photographie, for a monochrome insight into Morocco of old. This curation of 4,500 photos and 2,000 glass negatives charts the people of Morocco from 1870 to 1950. The collection was a joint effort between two collectors, who realised that between them, they had amassed an important vignette of Moroccan life. Discover these inspired photos before heading to the rooftop cafe for sweet tea and stunning views over Marrakech.

Afternoon

The Souks

North of Marrakech's shining square lie the myriad souks, ancient marketplaces that beguile with the cry of vendors, piles of technicolour spices, and otherworldly goods. They offer an enchanting experience, spilling out from the Rue Souk Smarine into a labyrinth of alleyways and small squares. You’ll find artisan crafts, often being made in front of you, steeped in generations of tradition. Prepare to barter for those must-have Moroccan wares.

Jardin Majorelle

After the intensity of the souks, it’s time to relax. This paradise on the fringe of the dizzying medina has long been a tranquil respite for travellers. Originally designed by Jacques Majorelle, the French Orientalist, the landscape garden and iconic blue Cubist villa is a pleasing sight. After Majorelle died, Yves Saint-Laurent and partner Pierre Bergé bought and maintained the garden. So loved was it by the designer that his ashes are scattered here. Explore the Islamic Art Museum and Amazigh Museum in the Art Deco villas to complete your visit.

Evening

Jemaa el-Fna

There’s only one place to head when the sun slinks away. Marrakech’s main square is a bustling centre of centuries-old heritage and vibrant entertainment. UNESCO recognise it as a ‘Masterpiece of World Heritage’; if anything, its a masterpiece of theatrics; when the sun sets, out come the musicians, acrobats, comedians and snake charmers. There’s no other place quite like it, a nightly carnival with roots in the 11th century. Head for a rooftop bar for respite before indulging your curiosities in this vibrant square.

Gueliz & Ville Nouvelle

For slick contrast to the historic bustle of the medina, spend an evening in the adjoining neighbourhoods of Gueliz & Ville Nouvelle. This is where “new town” Marrakech was built by the French, set with leafy gardens and cafe culture. You’ll find high-end shopping and the like, but in the evening it’s a hive of impeccable dining and glitzy bars, should you need a shot of something different to Marrakech’s historic centre.
